Cheapest way to upgrade
Posted by Ron Pestes on June 24, 2011 at 5:19 pmHi Guys, if I am coming over from FCP what is the cheapest way to get into Production Premium? Can I buy Premiere Elements and then get the upgrade price to the full suite, or do I have to pay the full amount the first time I set up with Adobe?

June 24, 2011 at 5:32 pmYou cannot upgrade to a suite from Elements.
You will have to pay the full amount. -

June 24, 2011 at 5:35 pmAdobe allows you to rent their software on a monthly basis as well…could be a great way to decide if it’s worth the overall investment.
FYI, the student discounted version of CS5 is not eligible for upgrades (as my students soon discover when they graduate). -

June 24, 2011 at 6:52 pmThe older version needs to have a valid serialnumber, otherwise it won’t work.

That’s a great idea – here is something that might help:

Apparently you can upgrade to CS5.5 Production Premium all the way from Premiere Pro or just “Premiere”, for $1099. If “Premiere” means any version of Premiere including v.1.0 from 1991 then it’s a pretty sweet deal, as those should be available for next to nothing – I might even have one or two copies lying around.
As Ann Bens mentioned, make sure that serial number is valid and not used already for an upgrade – otherwise Adobe won’t let you use it.
I haven’t been able to find a competitive upgrade that would let you cross-grade directly from FCP for less money than the full version – I’ll keep looking though.
Finally, subscriptions are here:

$129 per month for Production Premium.

Adobe runs a great special – $799 for FCP owners, through dealers only (i.e. not through Adobe website). Videoguys have it:
One source told me this deal requires to own a point product, yet Videoguys’ page doesn’t seem to indicate it.

June 24, 2011 at 8:33 pmHi Alex,
Yes, the FCP upgrade deal is a “Point Upsell” – you must own a copy of Premiere, Photoshop, etc. to upgrade from.
This is a good price and is available through end of month
