Just started using C4D with Arnold on a 2015 iMac 4Ghz 64Gb Quad core I7 with the M395X GPU.

Machine gets around 2000 on Cinebench 20.

So, looking at what options I have apart from moving over to Windows and dropping a bunch of cash I don’t have on a Ryzen 9 setup.

One thought was picking up an older Mac and using it as render node, however have no idea as to what gains I’d get for the investment particularly after paying for another Arnold license etc.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I bought 3 old HP Proliant rack servers (DL380 gen 7) for 200 euro each so total 600 euro, about the same in US currency (64 GB ram in each).

This is nothing extreme but it’s cheap, each server run cinebench R21 around 2700 with two Xeon X5650 CPU’s.

It’s DDR3 memory and older CPU’s so no match for modern HW but they are cheap, only downside is power usage, at full speed all rendering they use around 800 watts and do generate a fair amount of noise and heat.
