As if the HVX-200 isn’t already the most camera for the dollar, I have a client that I will be doing some work for later this year that wants to purchase a camera to shoot a few events with that will match with the P2 footage that I will be shooting for him. They can’t afford to have me do it all. Is there a camera out there that will shoot decent enough to cut in with the P2 stuff that I will be doing? They only want to spend about $2000 – $3000. I am not worried about shooting myself in the foot with this one since the stuff they will be shooting is quite minimal but it will add to the project. Consumer HD would be nice but it needs to cut into the same FCP timeline. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The HVX-200 is the most inexpensive camera that shoots DVCPRO HD. The only cameras in that price range are HDV and AVCHD cameras, and they are very different formats of HD. DVCPRO HD is 4:2:2 HD, whereas HDV and AVCHD are 4:2:0…and they only shoot 1080 (the JVC ProHD camera shoots 720p, but that is not in your price range).

The HVX-200 IS the B-camera…so it has no B camera. Not one that matches anyway. You can shoot HDV and then color correct the best you can, but it really will look different.

If they can’t afford to buy, tell them to rent.
