Charactor Generator???
Posted by Ganer Stewart on July 15, 2005 at 8:44 pmI’m changing over from Priemer Based NLE system to FCP 5.0 and I’m finding the inboard CGM (i.e.. Text, Live Type) ineffective for the type of commercial production that we do 90% of the time, car commercials and furniture store commercials. We do these spots with little or no turn-around time, same day shoot and edit. I don’t have time to After EFX or MOTION cool fonts. I’m using Inscriber now and they don’t support FCP. I’m looking for alternatives to Inscriber. Any help would be appriciated.

July 15, 2005 at 9:16 pmI am a ten year veteran of Inscriber and feel your pain.
I recommend getting an accomplished professional FCP colleague, even better if he or she knew Inscriber, to show you through Livetype. Not some kid showing you the cool FX … that’s not what you’re after I gather from your email.
The interface with all those twizly knobs and dials can seem a bit much coming from the simplicity and accuracy of a program like Inscriber with it’s Templates (ie: I still don’t know how to type in a baseline value I have to use my mouse) but Livetype is quite nice when integrated properly with FCP.
In fact I find I’m liking it more for the odd animated transition that Titlemotion always promised but didn’t really deliver in an easy-to-use interface. I won’t say LT rocks but it’s very capable and like I said there are a number of features that someone just has to show you that you may find increases your ability to generate money-making (ie: quick) titles.

July 15, 2005 at 10:14 pmAll I see in car commercials and other locally based quickly made commercials is LiveType! They don’t even customize the font effects. It’s starting to feel kida “video toaster.”
LiveType is great, but for doing customized stuff it’s interface is anything but logical.

Use the Title 3D tool under Boris > Title 3D. Much better titling tool and you get a lot of options like edges, glows, shadows, etc…

July 16, 2005 at 4:47 amI do a lot of auto and furniture retail stuff. Once you “get” Livetype, you’ll be blown away by it’s capabilities. I also use Boris Red and and Title 3d for a lot of stuff. Good tools…just a different approach to getting it done.

July 16, 2005 at 8:11 pmAs another Inscriber user I would second the recomendation of the CHV text collection.
It’s a series of plug-ins that make use the FCP “Text Tool” interface, but add much needed features. Like inscriber it creates a clip that can easily be moved around the timeline and treated like a graphic with an alpha channel. Not quite up to Inscriber standards, but worth the $49.
On the other hand, motion is fairly easy to learn and has lots of great text animations and lower third templates. It does require rendering but it integrates with FCP very well. I find I use it for any animated text needs.
