Activity Forums Maxon Cinema 4D character rigging question – no mesh possible?

    Howdy,

Make Editable is the command to use (under the Functions menu) to convert geometric primitives and nurbs objects into editable meshes. It will also make spline primitives into editable splines.

You only need to use mesh objects if the objects will deform or bend. Rigid characters, made up of several different parts (like robots and such) which will not deform, don’t need to be mesh objects. You can simply rig the parts themselves by constraining them or parenting them to a rigged joint skeleton.

Thanks Dan – what would be the best way to create a skeleton and rig it to a non-mesh object?

    Howdy,

Well, the easiest way is to parent the objects to the joints, but you want make sure to place them as secondary children of the joints like this:

    +Joint
    +-Joint
    +–Joint
    +—Object
    +–Object
    +-Object

… otherwise the objects would interfere with the joints’ rigging.
