  • Chapters on a thumb drive

Posted by Rich Kutnick on October 8, 2013 at 2:54 pm

The last I heard, there was no way to create chapters for negotiating a video on a thumb drive…then the other day a colleague told me that this could be accomplished in Encore. Does anyone know if this is true? If so, is there ANY OTHER software that can accomplish this feat? I certainly do not want to get started with Adobe and their cloud-based concepts for purchasing, leasing, renting or whatever they currently are doing with their software. Please advise, and thank you in advance.

What are you trying to put on a thumb drive? What kind of player?

I just now tested a complete DVD (VIDEO_TS) folders on a thumb drive and played it as a DVD. Complete with the chapters menu. It plays on my PC like any other DVD.

Interesting, Stephen…Is there any way that you could present the file structure here, either as a directory print screen or otherwise list what is in the root directory and the child folders under it? How exactly did you accomplish this feat–step-by-step instructions? And what software did you use to play back the video–a DVD Player such as Cyberlink or a generic player such as VLC Media Player? I also am curious if this might work with a Blu-ray disk, provided the respective file structure is maintained on the thumb drive (and the thumb drive has the proper capacity, e.g. VERY BIG)? Plesae elaborate, if you will, Stephen, and thanks for the one-up!

    Root
    DVD
    VIDEO_TS
    AUDIO_TS

I just dragged the DVD folder to VLC or Wondershare Player.
You probably only need the VIDEO_TS folder, but since the AUDIO_TS folder is in the DVD spec, I have seen players that won’t play a video without the AUDIO_TS folder even though it’s always empty.

I don’t do much BluRay, but I can’t see why it wouldn’t work on a thumb drive. Just mount the iso file with something like Virtual CloneDrive and copy the files to the thumb drive. Or copy the iso file to the thumb drive and mount it from there.

I just now had a chance to try my own experiment (with VLC Media Player)–if I copy over the DVD structure, choose open folder and maneuver to my SD Card (I do not have a large enough thumb drive, so I used an SD Card), I get full DVD menuing capabilities. If I do the same with a Blu-ray, I can move to any selected Chapter but I cannot get to any menu screens…but it DOES work to view the program!!
