Chapters don’t go in Menu or Button Order
Posted by Film Fan 5 on May 1, 2005 at 10:19 pmHello,
I have a simple program with 4 buttons that all link to respective video.
When I play the 1st chapter and skip to what should be chapter 2, it jumps to the number 4 button and reads it as chapter 2, when in fact I have them all listed sequentially according to chapters.
Original burn was fine until I deleted one file because audio was off. I corrected audio in Premiere, exported/imported and now this issue. I renamed all timelines and the revised file.
Any ideas?

May 1, 2005 at 10:41 pmDo you mean real chapters (with chapter markers in a single timeline) or “chapters” as in several timelines linked together via the end action?
You said that when play the first chapter and skip (“next” key on the remote control?) the DVD jumps to the fourth button. The DVD goes to the fourth button on the menu? Or the DVD goes to the video that you have linked the fourth button to?

May 2, 2005 at 2:05 amHi RK,
As in several timelines linked together via the end action.
The DVD goes to the video that is linked to the 4th button.
Hope this offers a clue.
Thanks.

May 2, 2005 at 5:23 amJoe,
I just did a “Check Project” and received the following errors:
It listed 3 of my 4 timelines and noted:
“Trims and/or chapters adjusted”
I’m certain this has something to do with my timelines (acting as chapters) are not playing in the proper order (sequentially locked to buttons).
Would you please advise?
Thanks!

May 2, 2005 at 2:19 pmWhen you hit the “next chapter” key on the remote, the player will jump to the next chapter marker in a timeline (timeline = VTS on the DVD). If there is no chapter marker in the timeline or if the DVD is already past the last marker, the player will ignore the “end action” setting and jump to the next higher numbered VTS. The VTSs are numbered in the order you added the timelines to your project.
There is a simple solution for what you would like to do: Add a chapter marker almost at the end of each timeline, on the last available start of a GOP (indicated by the white ticks above the timeline). This will be half a second or less away from the end. With this chapter marker in place, when you hit the “next” key, the player will jump to this chapter point, keep playing for a split second and then perform the “end action” you have set for that timeline.

May 2, 2005 at 2:24 pmThis is not related to the problem with the unexpected behavior of the “next” key. (See my other post in this thread.)
The warning means that Encore may have moved the position of trims and/or chapter markers by a tiny amount (half a second or less), so that they fall on the nearest start of a GOP. Which they have to. 🙂

May 2, 2005 at 4:28 pmHi RK,
What is GOP?
This doesn’t solve my problem because the ‘end action’ defaults to my main menu (as I prefer).
I want the skip option on DVD remote to skip the disc to the next “Chapter” (video- as in timeline)… not to end action which for me defaults to main menu.
I did notice that for some reason Encore trimmed my audio and/or video and they no longer match at the end of each timeline.
I tried to even them or match the ends but Encore won’t be that specific.
Seems I’ll have to redesign project.
Thanks.

May 2, 2005 at 6:16 pmA GOP is a Group Of Pictures, a building block of MPEG video. Each GOP starts with an I-frame which contains the entire image, compressed similar to a JPEG still. The I-frame is followed by a number of B- and P-frames which consist mainly of pointers to what has changed in comparison to preceeding and following frames. These frames are responsible for most of the compression in MPEG video. One GOP is max 18 frames NTSC or 15 frames PAL. The usual default size is 15 frames NTSC or 12 frames PAL, which is roughly half a second of video.
As for the “next” key issue: If the end action of the timeline is set to return to the menu and the timeline is also started from a button that did not tell the timeline to change its end action, then you shouldn’t add the chapter marker at the very end to make the DVD do what you want it to do. Instead you should make sure to add every timeline in the correct order to your projects.
