Chapter markers in FCP???
Posted by Justin Dee on July 25, 2005 at 12:48 pmHope this isn’t a daft question but here goes,…
I’ve just finished a project and need to add chapter markers for certain scenes so I can skip to certain parts of the DVD for screenings. Is this possible in FCP??
Thanks in advance…

July 25, 2005 at 1:22 pmDuplicate your Sequence in FCP and use the Dupe for the DVD if you want to leave your original “unaltered.”
1. Delete all markers: Mark > Markers > Delete All.
2. Park the cursor in the Timeline EXACTLY where you want the first chapter marker.
3. Make sure to “DE-select ALL” (Shift-Apple-A) so no timeline files are highlighted.
4. Hit the “m” key. It will leave a marker on the timeline. Don’t move on yet.
5. Hit (Option-Apple-M)
6. Click “Add Chapter Marker”
7. In TOP Box: Type the Chapter Name (Not too long) Number (1. 2. 3.) if wanted.
8. Click OK
Move Cursor to where you want the next Chapter to begin and Repeat steps 4 thru 8.
Continue until all Chapters are marked. (Don’t forget to hit “Save”, just in case.)
A. Choose File > Export > QT Movie.
B. In the pop-up menu, choose Markers > “Chapter Markers” then Save.
C. After the export, drop that exported QT movie file into a newly-opened blank iDVD window.
D. Make any menu style and name changes in iDVD and burn, baby, burn.

I don’t think you put a marker where you want the first chapter, I think FCP creates that one automatically.

July 25, 2005 at 3:02 pmGood list, but #5 can be simplified.
You have: Hit (Option-Apple-M)
You can actually just hit “M” at that point and it will work. Or to put it another way, change #4 to “Hit “M” twice” and then erase #5.

That’s right. DVDSP (not FCP) will always place a marker at the head of a track. It will give you an error if there’s a chapter marker to close to the head of the track. I think the next marker has to be at least 2 seconds further down.
