Since FCP 7, whenever I add a transition, the transition is applied to all the clips that are highlighted. I don’t want that, but I can’t find how to change it so that it is only applied to the transition where my CTL is positioned. Please somebody??

Press Cmd-Shift-A to deselect all. FCP will apply transitions to any selected clips.

Thanks, but isn’t there a way to let FCP just do the transition on the place where my CTL is positioned?? It happens to me often that I find out much later that the transition has been applied to all the selected clips. Then I have to undo a lot of things. It’s a hassle!!

Only if no video clips are selected in the timeline, then if you have the playhead at an edit point on an autoselected track the transition will be applied.

Thanks. Means that the Apple engineers made my life harder thinking they were making it easier. There should have been a window coming up asking me if I wanted to apply the transition to all the selected clips. I think this is a stupid change in FCP 7

They can’t please all the people all the time Itamar … for the vast majority this is either a good thing or a couldn’t care less either way thing, only a very few would find it a bad thing. You’re right tho, a simple user preference to “Warn before applying multiple transitions” would seem to be a reasonable option to have, but Apple have always tended toward a minimal interaction through user preferences approach in order to strike a balance between function and simplicity. For what its worth I’ve always wished that they would offer a Simple and Advanced mode for the User Preferences, with Simple being what is currently offered and Advanced being offering a much much deeper level of customization of both interface and operation … and the only reason I mention this is in the bizarre hope that a wandering pair of Apple ProAppDev eyes will alight on my thoughts on the subject and run with it. (Go on, you know you want to…)

I think it’s a great improvement in FCP, one of the best new features. Because so much in the application is dependent on selection, filters, transitions, cuts, lifts, ripples, copies, I have gotten into the habit of making sure nothing is selected unless and until it needs to be selected. Cmd-Shift-A is the three fingered salute that’s my friend.

    All the best,

I found myself needing that Deselect All function so frequently, such as before trimming, that I assigned it to the “C” key. I think of it a “Clear” and before I do anything I hit C and clear the previous selection.

It takes the place of the Crop function which I’m OK using from the tool Palatte.
