  • Changing the general project settings from 16:9 to 4:3

Posted by Remington Markham on March 29, 2009 at 6:25 am

I am using Adobe Premiere Pro CS3:

I’m editing footage in a 16:9 project with 16:9 footage. I want to change the general project settings to 4:3 and fit the footage to the comp, but when ever I try to all the info is grayed out in the info box, not allowing me to do so. Is there a different way to do this? I do not want to interpret the footage into 4:3 and I do not want to export it and place it in a new project if at all possible.

In CS3….create a new project with the 4:3 settings. Import your 16:9 Project into that new 4:3 project. Then either drag your 16:9 sequence onto the 4:3 timeline – or copy and paste all the clips in the 16:9 sequence into the 4:3 sequence.

In CS4 you can create sequences of different formats in the same project.

Similarly, I noticed that if I was in an HD project, only HD could be captured in the project. I switched my camera to downconvert HD to SD, and PP3 would not capture the footage in that HD project – none of the controls worked. When I made a new SD project, the HD footage could be captured from the camera when I enabled downconvert in camera to SD.

Was that an anomaly, or is that always true in PP3 – and does PP4 allow allow you to capture both HD and SD in the same project ?

In CS3 and earlier, yes, whatever your Project settings are determine everything else’ from what you can capture to what your sequence settings are. In CS4 you can have sequences of different settings in one project and I think you can capture in different formats -but I mostly import files – AVCHD, DVCProHD (P2 MFX), XDCAM. I only capture HDV or DV and even that less and less.
