When I try to change the speed of a clip, my Viewer goes to a red screen that says ‘Display unavailable, close and reopen window to restore.’ When I do that, FCP quits. Any remedies?

Sorry, first time I’ve ever heard of that particular error. Give us LOTS MORE detail.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

    Hi
I’ve seen it – and it was fatal, in that I never got that sequence to open again, although I was able to save the project by opening it into a new project. Also I could Export the damaged sequence to QuickTime without opening it, so was able to recover the edited work in the sequence, sort of…

I once saw a graphic designer use FCP 4.1.1 and he caused all sort of this and other problems by using ‘Fit to Fill’ for every clip he put onto the timeline – he had no conception of frame rates or the length of a clip…

In the end I got him to create a new dummy sequence and use this to make new exported movies of all his speed-changed clips, then re-import the new 100%-speed clips into his main sequences. Inconvenient as that was it was quicker for him to do all that than for me to teach him how to edit 😉
