Changing Frame Size in H.264 compression in AE CS3
hello,
I have a problem. I want to change the Frame Size in my project which is supposed to be compressed in H.264 but the problem is AE won’t give me the option where I can specify the frame size of the footage. Though they have presets like Apple iPod Large which is 640×480. Another question. Which is the best compression for the web? I have made 2 renders 1 is in Quicktime codec and another is H.264 codec. And I can’t see much difference between the 2 based on the quality though the file size of H.264 is 10x smaller than Quicktime Photo-JPEG. I’m a bit confused though many still use Quicktime compression for their published works.

you can specify the frame size for a render in the render settings in the render queue.
i think you are a little confused about what quicktime is versus codec… quicktime is just a container (some times called a wrapper), like avi or mxf, it does not represent a compression or codec. like avi or mxf, mov can be compressed in a variety of codecs like dv, mpeg, photo-jpeg, etc…
so you can have a mov file that uses the photo-jpeg codec and another mov that uses h.264.
all that being said… h.264 will produce smaller files, and would be good for streaming content on the web. you will get even better looking and smaller files if you can use a compression utility like sorenson squeeze or compressor to create your compressed files for the web. a compression utility can do a 2-pass, variable bit rate compression to give you optimal compression and high image quality, plus it can handle the resizing of the footage and even cutting down the frame rate, if needed. you don’t have to use a compression utility, but you will get better compressed files, no question.
