  • Changing Frame Size – Desktop Editing Mode?

Posted by Pravin Chottera on November 14, 2011 at 4:57 pm

    Hello all,

I captured some footage using Snapz Pro. The codec is Animation, the frame rate is 30fps, and pixel aspect ratio is square, and the frame size is 1809×1365. I made it that large because I’d like to be able to zoom in and out of the screen as the cursor moves and clicks.

Now when I bring the footage into Premiere, I drag the clip into the Create New Item icon and it creates a new sequence. But now I’d like to change the frame size to 720×480, and be able to resize my footage freely, but Premiere won’t let me do that.

I looked around in the forums before posting, and it seems like I need to change to “Desktop Editing Mode,” but I can’t seem to find that option anywhere.

Is there another way to change the screen size? Or have I not set something up correctly?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Create a new sequence and don’t use the video presets in the default tab. Select the “General” tab. Under Editing Mode, drop-down the list and choose “Desktop”. Then set your 720×480 size, pixel ascpect ratio, no fields, audio settings etc…

Drop you clips into that sequence and then you can animate the size and position in the effect area for that clip when selected.

You should be good to go.

    Hi Buck,

Thanks so much for the info. I’m new to Premiere (I’m coming off of years of Final Cut), so I thank you for bearing with me!

The problem is that I can’t seem to find the “General” tab. I can’t select the “Settings” tab until I select one of the presets. I’m clearly doing something wrong – I just can’t figure out what.

I’ve attached some screen shots, so hopefully that helps.

And thanks again for all the instruction!

I’m using Premier Pro. I guess it’s slightly different. Your “Settings” tab is my “General” tab. I’m guessing your “Custom” option at the top is my “Desktop” setting.
Try Custom. Sounds like the correct option. Good luck.

Thanks Buck. The problem I’m running into now is that I can’t match my settings exactly, so my footage looks blurry. The only way I can get my sequence to exactly match my clip (for example, its frame rate is 30.3 for some reason, even though I set it to 30 in Snapz) is to drag the clip into the Create New Item icon.

When I do that, I can no longer change the frame size. Have you ever run into this before?

I’m not used to working with such a bizzare frame rate. If you cannot set it in your settings tab for custom or alter the auto created sequence frame size, then I don’t know what to do from there.

My suggestion is to use a different program to capture your screen. One that will not cripple you with an odd video format and give you a clean 30fps (a good choice as most computer monitors run a 60 or 120 Hz)

Perhaps you have a 30.3 fps capture because your computer’s refresh rate is set that way, or some such setting that gets you that result. Maybe you can alter your computer monitor res/frame rate such that when you capture to a video, you get a standard frame rate.

Changing the refresh rate did the trick! Thanks so much!

I’ve never ran into this problem with FCP because it was easy to alter the sequence’s codec and frame no matter what codec and frame rate of the original clip was. Of course then you had to render, but that seemed like a small price to pay for such flexibility. I’m a bit disappointed that PP doesn’t have that same functionality, or at least doesn’t offer it with the same level of ease.

Anyway, thanks again for your time and help!
