Wow thanks for the tip. Time remapping in FCP has always been a pain to me. I am used to timewarp in Avid which lets you adjust and ramp time in the timeline without effecting the clip length.

Sorry I missed this debate the first time through. In case someone picks this up….

I like to keep my top layer empty then when I want to play around with speed I move my clip to the top layer, lock all my other layers and then adjust away. Cheers.

Wouldn’t you agree Shane that sometimes you don’t know your out point due to the speed of the clip? You need something to stop at a certain word in the script, you don’t always know where that is at half-speed in the clip. Unless you want to do a lot of math.

I came here looking for the answer to the same question. Hoping to find a possible solution instead getting heated about why some found it so wrong that we were having a problem… jeez. But I do the “lock track” method, but lately they’re big projects and it takes many clicks, then the clicks to undo the locks, etc…
The other thing I do, is to take the clip from the project bin, create a subclip, then adjust the speed, then drag to timeline. That way you’re not adjusting the speed of the original clip and the parts you’re not adjusting the speed.
    Thanks for the post

There is a solution right in this thread. Fast, precise and efficient.

“Big projects” and “click” or “drag” don’t go together. Big project in FCP means keyboard.

Dennis, thanks a TON for this great advice!!! I have been editing now for about 8 years (on the side) and have ALWAYS done this manually…you just saved me hours and hours!! I can’t believe I have overlooked this simple step for so long. I just wanted to thank you for suggesting it!
