I’m working on a project that involves a lot of movie parody shots. The one that I’m working on now is mimicking the “Back to the Futre” effect of a car popping into time travel. The shot was filmed with the camera near the road, filming the car’s approach, whipping quickly to follow the car and then locking into position as the car drives away. From the camera’s POV, the car is nearly head-on facing the camera, grows rapidly, rotates about 160 degrees, then shrinks away. The effects that will be added to the car include a heat-shield effect (blaze in front of the nose of the car, looks something like a re-entry burn for the space shuttle) and red/blue sparks that arc around the car from the nose burn.

I’m trying to find the best workflow for this, but I’m having some struggles. I’d thought originally that I’d create a null point, turn on its 3D mode, and the adjust it’s XYZ so that it’d match the shot, but that’s resulted in a lot of odd keyframing and just doesn’t match up. I’m not too big of a fan of hand painting and animating each scene, so I’m hoping that someone here would know of a few tricks to help me out.
