So, I’m pretty green to working with mixed formats and I’m cutting a large documentary that’s incorporating all kinds of media. I did a couple of promos early on that I cut on a sequence set up for me by the DP, in 1080i50 29.97 fps. Um… so anyway, I figured out that I’m supposed to cut on 1080p30 at 24fps. I’d like to be able to incorporate my promo into the current state of the film but I can’t seem to ditch the sequence settings + it certainly won’t copy + paste over nicely — we’re talking major audio hiccups + weird action goin’ on. Do i have to recut from scratch or is this salvagable?

    Color me confused. 1080i50 is a PAL format…and therefore runs at 25fps, not 29.97fps. And 1080p30 is a 29.97fps format, not 24fps.

So…you lost me right out of the gate.

Yep, I imported footage that was mistakenly shot in 29.97 DVPRO HD (it should have been shot at 24fps). Then I mistakenly edited it on a sequence that was the PAL 1080i50 (!!!). Don’t ask why. Now I want to take the promo that lives on the PAL sequence and move it over to the correct global setting — HD at 24 fps.

The majority of our footage was shot correctly and imported correctly but this little subset of our work is pretty gnarled. Salvagable? Fingers crossed.

If you shot at 29.97, you can’t just decide to edit 23.98 on a whim (24fps is film and film ONLY, BTW). If it wasn’t shot with the proper cadence, then it might not look right. You can try to use Compressor to convert the footage to 23.98 (choosing the same codec you shot with, but a different frame rate)…that generally does well.

But in your situation where you edited in a completely different time base…PAL. You will have to copy and paste your cut into a proper timebase timeline, and then fix each and every cut. Been there, done that.
