Posted by Randall Wilson on November 16, 2008 at 2:13 am

    Working on a G5 – FCP6 – Sony M15U deck – shot 108i 30p on Sony mini Digital HD Video tapes.

Just set up M15U deck and cannot playback HD tapes. Every time I try to play HD tapes message reads
” Change to correct tape format” The only help the manual offers in the Cause/Corrective Action is “This is an unsupported format and cannot be played back”

I can play DV tapes but not HD. Deck set to HDV. What settings do I need in FCP6 to be able to play HD tapes? Or could the problem be elsewhere?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks..

[Randall Wilson] “Change to correct tape format” Is the deck giving you this error, seems like the deck is not set up properly. Will the deck even handle 30p footage?

Messy post Randall. Firstly what camera was used to shoot the tapes. You say 108i 30p but is it 1080 60i or 30p? i and p are not the same thing, but it is possible to shoot p and embedd that into an interlaced tape format.

Secondly where does the error message show? Is it on the Sony deck or in FCP. If it is FCP then can you see the tape playing on the machine properly (ie monitoring the deck directly, not via FCP).

If the camera tapes were shot on a JVC, then it is possible that they can’t be played on the Sony deck. Not sure about the Sony M15U deck, but I know the HDW 1500 needs a converter board to play JVC tapes.

Also you haven’t indicated how you have FCP set. What Easy Setup did you selected before trying to capture?
