  • Change Parent directory using trimmed R3D: Possible?

Posted by Gabriele Turchi on April 21, 2011 at 11:18 pm

Not sure if what i am askink is possible ..
basically i have loaded the R3D necessary to the project using “import media based on EDL”
    I had 5 edls ,
    and all worked fine .

I worked of an external FW800 Drive

Now i have trimmed the R3D (in redcineX ) necessary to this project +24 frames handles ..to copy the files on My internal Drives ..

Is it possible relink the already loaded in the media browser Ful clip R3D with the trimmed version (that cover the part of the shot i need +24 frames handles..)

    if so ,
    how ?

I tried change parent directory , but i had to manually point shot by shot manually (because selecting all of them and pointing the main folder that contain my trimmed R3D nothing got relinked ..)

Or: do we have any consolidate function in resolve ? (to copy everything that is on the media pool to another directory?)

    Thanks

I’m not sure, but if you conform using Camera timecode, and redcine did not destroy it – you can just change the parent directory. If you conformed using Absolute timecode – it should be screwed when you trim red file. And I’m not sure about what will happen with edge timecode – you can check it using clipfinder.

i do conform using TC and RCX does not destroy the TC at all …

but the point is that i have my EDLs graded based on the master timeline g (with the full length R3D shots)

now that i have trimmed the R3D , i want to ask how quickly reconnect the file i have on the media browse to the trimmed ones …

if i select them all and i point the main directory that contain the new trimmed nothing happen …because i believe that resolve that not search on the subfolders when changing partent directory ?

if i select one by one pointing directly the trimmed files (so navigating trough all the folders directory (tipical of R3D) it does relink , but the length of teh file on the master session stays as full length (having black frames (but maybe this is normal ?)

Resolve DOES search in the RDC subfolders – I have recently relinked 2 parts each of 450 cuts of R3Ds from local RAID to the same structure but located on the remote server – but you should carefully select holding SHIFT key all the files at the media pool browse page, right click, chose change parent directory and enter following

    old string: /Volumes/RAID1/RED_SOURCES_OLD/
    new string /Volumes/RAID1or_whatever/WHATEVER/WHATEVER/REDSORCESNEW/

I’m not sure about slash at the end – you can experiment, but first try to relink to unmodified file at the different folder, if succeed – try trimmed version.

Just do a new conform, but add the new directory to the pool instead of the old directory and Resolve will conform using the new material and color trace the grades for you.

    Hi Mikhail,
i just tried but no success …

-I have Consolidated (in SCRATCH) all the shots i need for this conform (the ones that are on the master session) , and copied over my SAN (keeping the same Folder Structure)

-Than i have unplugged the external drive (that had the R3D media linked to it in resolve )
-opened resolve (obviously now the media went offline )
-selected all the Shots on the media browse –>right click –>change parent directory , and i have browsed the first folder that contain all the consolidated R3D (after that folder there are 3 or for subfolder before getting to the shots (like day one , day two etc…))

    But nothing got relinked …..

Any idea where i am dong wrong?

    Thanks

It’s very easy to screw the parent directory path when you trying to change it twice or more times. You should be very careful doing this

    thanks Mikhail

you are super kind to offer the remote assistance!!! but i don;t have skype here….

i am working off a duplicated project …so it should be safe …but i quite don’t get why is not working …(it should be a pretty easy task…)

ps:it does work if i manually change the directory shot by shot pointing the actual R3D file …but it does not work if i point 3 or 4 subfolder before ….

    thanks
