Hi I am changing the speed of clips in the timeline. However, whenever I do this the other clips ahead of the one I’m changing move back the duration that the clip is shortened.

How can I change clip speed using apple J without affecting the position of the other clips in the timeline?

One other question is how do I use the option drag shortcut in the timeline without splitting the underlying audio track where I drop the copied clip.

Thanks so much for your reply this will help me tremendously.

1st question: FCP does that because it’s the logical thing to do. Usually with speed changes on a single clip one has to “lift” the clip above into another track, lock the track in the timeline where most of your edits are – do your speed change on your clip on that new video track (so it doesn’t affect any other clip), adjust your in-n-outs on this speed-changed clip and drop it back in where you want it.

2nd question, not really sure what you’re getting at here, but sound like a lot of this can be accomplished by locking your tracks and unlinking your audio files, so I would experiment with that.

    The way I do it:

    1. Speed Change
Match Frame-loads the clip back into the viewer.
Apple + J to change speed.
Replace Edit to put the speed affected clip into the timeline without rippling.

Keep in mind that this changes the speed of the master clip. Not a problem unless you use the clip again. If so, just use Apple + J to change it back.

    2. To avoid an an insert edit when option + dragging, lift up on the option key before dropping. This changes your move to an overwrite instead of insert.

    Hope this helps you.
