challenges with a 59.94 fps sequence

720p? Nothing, that’s the standard frame rate for that format. 720p60…59.94.

1080p? Well, that’s a non-standard format and really has no delivery method. Tape doesn’t do 1080 59.94, the web doesn’t do 1080p 59.94 and BluRay doesn’t do 1080p 59.94.

Which do you have?

it is mixed footage, predominantly 720p60.
30% is 24p (camera man mistake and I have to deal).
I have created several test time lines to see what works better and determine a work flow.
I am not only mixing 60p and 24p at normal speed, I am also mixing clips converted with cinema tools, and slowmo created with twixtor (down to 10%).
To my surprise most everything looked good in the 60p time line and was by far the best option. The 2 that I expected to be problematic; were the 24p clips dropped directly into to the 60p fcp time line and the clips converted with cinema tools to a 23.976 frame rate to slow it down then put into a 60p time line.
So, before I move forward I wanted to assure that I could export and deliver on a 720p60 sequence setting (not knowing what I might encounter down the road).

Sorry for ignorance. I am still just a student of this video world.

Well, interestingly enough, 23.98 in a 59.94 sequence in FCP looks pretty good…and works rather well. While 23.98 in a 29.97 sequence looks really bad.

59.94 has a lot going for it.

Interesting that 60fps slow motioned down to 10%, but still played back at 59.94 looks good.

But no one has answered my original question,

So, before I move forward I wanted to assure that I could export and deliver on a 1280X720p 59.94fps sequence setting (not knowing what I might encounter down the road).

60p works great. It’s pretty much the answer to editing 24p and 60p in the same sequence. You can also mix in 480i and 1080i too. FCP will spread it all out across the 60 frames. Which, incidentally is what pulldown is doing. So you can take a 60p sequence with 24p in it and run it through AE or compressor to interlace it as 480i or 1080i and the 24p will have correct interlaced pulldown. Something FCP will not do if you throw 24p into a 29.97i sequence. Did they fix that in X?

I’ve never delivered in 60p. Most TV is broadcast in 1080i. For me, working in 720p60 has just been a necessity at times when handed mixed formats. Mostly because FCP doesn’t know how to add 24p to a 29.97 timeline and apply pulldown. Since it can’t do that, working in a 720p60 sequence is pretty much the best option. But it’s a hassle. Every change requires a 720p60 export, then an interlacing pass to SD in AE, then a recompress in compressor. A bit of a pain. But actually, since compressor does such a horrible job of downscaling interlaced material, I run 1080i through AE too before compressing.
