CHALLANGE: Saving Jittery footage from a plane shoot
I just did some low budget shooting in a plane and a good portion of the footage is jittery; the image moves back and forth really quick and the image turns out to be clear then blurred, clear then blurred.
We used a HD Canon XHA1 and shot at 16:9/24f but were only working on a SD timeline so we do have room to crop.
I was wondering if there was a way to save this footage, perhaps an image stabilize like the new one in FCP 6 would do the trick? But I

You may be able to save a few second here and there with some quick cuts, but the smoothcam filter in FCP 6 can’t compensate for motion blur. A little shakiness is not the same as an involuntary whip pan.
If you have FCP 6 you should just give it a try and see what comes out. Since scaling is less of an issue with HD footage in an SD sequence, you may be surprised… or it may suck. It really all comes down to what is happening in your footage from frame to frame. Depending on the shot, viewers may be put off by totally stable footage. They know they bounce around a bit on an airplane.

That’s a real tough one. If you had shot at a higher frame rate, I’d suggest you slo-mo the footage. At 24f you don’t have much room to slow down. But, if you do have a few really steady parts you might be able to cut the speed in half to lengthen the duration of those parts. Maybe you can get creative to save it. How about you simulate a still camera shoot and let it go all mushy with motion blur until you find a good still frame–then click!
