    Hey all

Am making a short video which uses typography written onto a blackboard and need to create a similar style of effect to the one used in the linked video.

    https://vimeo.com/8951641

Have already looked at using scribble mixed with alpha matting layers with a chalky texture, hasn’t been massively successful so far but am continuing to try this.

Anyone have any other ideas on how to recreate something similar to this style in after effects and illustrator.

    Cheers
    Dan

Try using Scribble AND Stroke together to make the effect and Roughen Edges to add some variation.

    1. Clean up the image in photoshop or illustrator. (use single-color vector graphics if possible)

    2. Use the Layer-> AutoTrace: Check the “Apply to new layer” box and select the appropriate channel in the drop down box. (This should generate masks in the shape of your logo/image)

    3. Effect –> Generate –> Stroke: Check “All Masks” and “Stroke Sequentially”

    4. Animate the “Start” and/or “End” values to get the desired effect.

    5. Effect –> Generate –> Scribble: The “Scribble” value should be “All Masks Using Modes”

    5. Animate the “Start” and/or “End” values for the Scribble Effect

    6. Adjust color values as you see fit.

    7. Effect –> Stylize –> Roughen Edges : Adjust as you see fit

At least that’s the gist of it. Try messing with the values to get the desired effect.

    Hope it helps!

The linked video uses static shots and stop motion of actual chalk on an actual blackboard. The elements were isolated and artfully animated and composited.

You can check out this tutorial and see if it gives you any good ideas.

Also, the Adobe Community Search turns up a ton of things.

[Walter Soyka] “The linked video uses static shots and stop motion of actual chalk on an actual blackboard.”

I didn’t intend for this to come across sounding so short — my point was that this effect is very easy to do practically, and very difficult to do digitally.

Thats the route i,ve gone down, as well as using a alpha matte to affect the opacity of the strokes, which is looking close to the vimeo clip.
