Chain of FX
Posted by Roger Bansemer on March 31, 2014 at 1:30 pmIf a chain of video FX are put on an event or on a track but not all the FX are utilized, does Vegas when rendering have to deal with all the unused FX which would slow down rendering time?

Yes, unless you uncheck them. Vegas Pro will pass control to each FX and they will do whatever it is they do and pass control on. There are even some FX that alter the video event when everything is set to zero! (you could argue that this is a bug). So yes, all of the FX in the chain will get passed the video data to process unless they are unchecked (off).

March 31, 2014 at 8:43 pmI also recently noticed that the effect an FX has on the event also is altered by where it appears on the chain. IE…PAN CROP is always by default the first in the chain. If for example you mask or crop the image then decide to utilize SONY BORDER the effect will be vastly different if it is placed before or after PAN CROP.
This is also true with varied FX chains and can really cause some concern as to the why? Sony DEFOCUS is another that is so dependent on where it falls in the chain that the FX will almost become non functional.
Not sure if this is mentioned in the documentation it may well be.

March 31, 2014 at 8:51 pmI was aware of the order having an effect and am careful with that aspect of it. Didn’t know until now that an unused effect would slow rendering though which is nice to know for future renders.

March 31, 2014 at 11:47 pmYea, it’s natural to think that if a plug-in has been added and not altered so that it’s still on the (Default) preset that it will do nothing but, in fact, (Default) may actually do something (whatever that default behavior is).
Also empty top level tracks will slow down a render. Vegas Pro still processes the track with respect to how its composed with the other tracks even if there are no events on it and this takes time and slows down the render. Always delete empty tracks.

April 1, 2014 at 1:46 pmI clean up and delete the empty tracks before I render. Does not combining like tracks have any similar effect as well?
For Ex: Images spread out across tracks wherein they could be grouped on a singular track.

April 1, 2014 at 8:54 pmThat’s good to know. When I use 4 cameras and after I sync them, I have always just muted the track and kept it never really using it again. I’ll remove those tracks.

Muted tracks are fine. No need to remove them. When a track is muted, Vegas Pro skips over it. I was referring to entire tracks with nothing on them or one track with a single image and another track with a single image and paying the cost of processing two tracks when those images could have been moved to one track and the empty track deleted.

Thanks for the confirmation of that. Often I have a “scratch” track where I may move things to while tweaking. I usually have that track muted. It is usually completely “covered” and so technically does not need to be muted to not contribute, but I figured muting would help performance and better safe than sorry.
