Center objects relative to the canvas
I have an image that I want to align in the exact center of the canvas but I can’t figure out an easy way to do this. I assume this is a relatively simple task but I can’t seem to figure it out.

Gotcha. That’s actually what I ended up doing, I was just hoping there’d be something similar to Photoshops quick and easy Align Center for perfectly centered objects in one click.

It worked with me pretty simple. If this is what you mean: After effects -> Layer -> Transform -> Center in view.

In the interest of continuing to beat a dead horse (or thread), since I was looking today, the keyboard shortcut for centering an object within the view is:
COMMAND-HOME

I’m not sure when it was introduced, but there is an align window available in AE now.
Window -> Align
