I’m trying to add rain to the background of a shot we have, so I have drawn a mask around the character and foreground objects so the rain should only be applied to the background. However, when applying the filter, it ignores the mask and adds rain to the whole shot, going over everything so was wondering the best way to stop this from happening so it is only applied to the background?

Try adding the Rain to a masked Adjustment Layer.

so if i understand what you have right now… you have two layers, the bottom layer is the footage and upper layer is a duplicate of the footage with masks and the cc rain effect….

if this is the case, the easy fix is to duplicated the upper layer and remove the cc rain effect (or just hide it by clicking the ‘fx’ box) from the new upper layer. next, set the middle layer to use the upper layer as a track matte (alpha matte). this will ‘mask’ out the areas you want masked from the cc rain effect.

mike’s right, the easy way would be to set you already masked and rain effected layer to and adjustment layer by clicking the adjustment check box (looks like a b&w contrast icon) in the switches panel for that layer…
