  • caustics and mirror – projecting an image via a mirror to a plane

    hello,
    i have the following question:
i build a projector (a square spot with a material, that has in its transparency channel an image).
this projector is directing to a mirror. this mirror should bring the light down to a plane. (as you often do with real projectors)

when i just project it on a plan in front of the projector it works fine. i see the image and everything is allright. but when i try to do it via the mirror i see nothing.

i activated caustics, so i see the light. but no more image.

what have i done wrong? why is there only the light?

It may be that caustics don’t support material transparency on lights — I’ve never actually tried. My suggestion: fake it.

Should work but you have to turn Caustics on in both the light and render settings. To smooth it out go for more photons, if the image is dark the energy may have to go up a way. More photons = more time and depending on how crisp you want the reflection it may be better to fake it as Adam says. Particularly if the mirror is (probably) flat.

to fake it its easy. but the point is to not fake it!

[Brian Jones] “Should work but you have to turn Caustics on in both the light and render settings.”

I just tried a quick test and it does in fact work.
