I’ve read Jim Tierney’s tutorial on caustics and everything works except the wave world effect. When it reaches it in the timeline, it’s just the greyscale color with waves, not the wave effect applied to the tiles. What did I do wrong?

I haven’t read the tutorial in quite some time, but usually you’ll use Wave World with a blending mode (try soft light) or to drive a distortion effect such as Displacement Map.

Yes, additionally, Wave World is almost always used as a source for other effects such as Caustics and displacements. This require precomposing or nesting the Wave World output (unless your render WW as a separate movie).

Look over that tutorial very carefully, just one more time. I think you’re missing the one step where WW is precomped.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

The only way i have ever gotten the caustics to work as indicated in the tutorial, is to actually export a movie (.mov) of the wave world layer, then reimport it into the project and place it where the article claims you can have the “pre-comped” wave world layer, this frustrated me deeply for hours, when i followed the article to the T, but my pool bottom layer did nothing,
