Caturing issue in FCP HD
Hey all,
I’ve been capturing DV in FCP HD off of a PD-170 camera and I’m having this strange problem.
Every so often, the capture just “hangs”. The video on the laptop screen just freezes while the tape just rolls on, playing the footage as if nothing happens. After a minute, the camputer unfreezes and matches the camera display again, but the resulting capture is horribly out of sync with audio.
Does anyone have any ideas how to correct this?

If you are using hdv, dvcam and dv footage in the same timelime, is there any way to capture it and use it without rendering the clips when used in an hdv timeline setup. thanks.

Sounds like a bufering problem…
What kind of laptop are you using?
(Type/disk size/RAM/how much free space on the disk and if you know the speed and buffer-size of it, that would be good)I see that the general concensus goes towards not capturing to the system disk. When working off a Powerbook, I have had much more success doing exactly that (instead of capturing to an external FW on the same FireWire bus as the camera), given that I never fill the disk beyond 70%.
You should anyway first try to trash preferences. But I guess you’ve done that already…

I’m using a 1.5GHz Powerbook with 1Gb of RAM.
Your post got my gears rolling. I think my problem is that I’m capturing to a drive that’s connected to the laptop via USB 2.0. I’ve edited that way, but never captured before. I’m going to try again tomorrow through the firewire port and see if there’s an improvement.
Also, I alreay trashed the prefs and repaired disk permissions. No luck.
Not really sure where to find out about buffer size or speed.
