    Hello all,

Is anyone using Disk Space Tool snapshots for anything other than displaying disk space?

For example, snapshots suggest themselves as a nice potential replacement for 3rd party apps like Disk Catalog Maker. But I notice that snapshots made in CatDV Pro 11.0.7 can’t be read in CatDV Pro 11.1.3, which defeats any long term purpose.

For facilities that have accumulated lots of external drives, but only intend to ingest portions of each drive’s content into CatDV (eg just masters but not raw footage or non-media files), a snapshot of the full file system of each drive is necessary, and it would be very handy if it were permanently integrated into CatDV.

Disk snapshots are intended for reasonably long term use but unfortunately there was a problem with the way old disk snapshots were saved prior to 11.1.2 that meant they couldn’t be compatible with later versions.

One idea we had but haven’t implemented yet is to let you compare an old snapshot with the current disk usage so you can see where the main changes are. It’s good to hear that people are using the feature though so we’ll keep things under review.

    Thanks Rolf.

My clients frequently ingest directly from the snapshot window. Another common use of snapshots is to answer the basic question “is file x on external disk y?” A “Find” feature in Disk Space Tool, similar to the Quick Filter in CatDV Pro, would help a lot. The addition of Find would make Disk Space Tool functionally equivalent to Disk Catalog Maker and consolidate the workflow for facilities that track many external drives.
