  • Casting Shadows w 3D Layers

Posted by Stewart Goldstein on October 13, 2005 at 10:55 pm

In a Comp, I have three layers:

    1 – Light

    2 – Object

    3 – Background

For #2 (Object) and #3 (Background), I have made them 3D Layers, so that the light will affect both layers.

How do I make the light cast a shadow from #2 (Object) onto #3 (Background)? I have turned “Cast Shadows” to ON, but I don’t see any shadows. Do I have to do something else to specify what receives the shadows?

    Thx!

Check the help under “3D Compositing > Working with 3D layers > Understanding 3D layer material options”.

Shadows need to be cast by the light and the object, and accepted by the background.

Have you moved your object away from the background (on the z-axis)? You can either push your background back away from the “camera” or you can move you object closer. Using the top view can help you do see where you’re moving the layers to. You can control the appearance of the shadow this way too.
    Hope this helps!

    1. Light has to have ‘cast shadows’ turned on
    2. Object must be 3D and have ‘cast shadows’ turned on in the materials twirly
    3. Background must have ‘accept shadows’ turned on in the materials twirly.

    Good luck.

“Accept Shadows” – that made it happen, thanks!

is there a way to diffuse the shadows, so they don’t look so harsh?

You can adjust the softness with the light properties. Look for the Diffusion twirly and increase it.

    Good luck.
