  • Care to Speculate on Release of FCP?

Posted by Kevin Williams on February 14, 2006 at 9:57 pm

I realize no “official” word has been announced but….I am in the process of starting a Gov’t Channel and looked into buying FCP 5 (academic version) back in December. It stated that Estimated Shipping for Final Cut Studio was 1 – 3 business days. Now, it states FCS Estimated Shipping as 10-15 business days. Hmmmmmmm…what are your thoughts?

We’ve been speculating on FCP6 for about two months. It’s generally a waste of creative thought but LAFCPUG usually has a poll going to see what gets fixed, added, updated.

NAB is in May, still 8-10 weeks out and, heck, FCP6 might not ship for another 2 months after any announcements.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

BTW, If you were going to start a business for profit, you cannot legally use the educational version. As far as speculation goes, you can usually guess that something will probably happen at NAB – but no one knows for sure except Apple.

My copy of FCS would only be used for Government use…thanks for the heads up though!

    Education is Education

Read “Not For Profit”, “No private Enterprise”.

Besides, if you can’t afford the full software package, I’d say you’ve got problems already.

Besides, Educational Software can not be upgraded.

The likely reason for the change in estimate shipping time is because of the release of the Universal version of FCS.

Once the Universal version is released (supposedly at the beginning of March), all software updates to FCS will apply only to the Universal versions of the software (the Universal version is based on a new codebase for both PowerPC and Intel Macs). So, if any updates are released prior to the next paid upgrade to FCS, you’ll need to have the Universal version installed to apply them.

The terms of the license only say that you have to be legally eligible student or staff. It says nothing about profit or business. You can only use an education version while you’re an education eligible customer. If you no longer are, the license is revoked, and you need to purchase a retail copy.

The education version, as Steve says is not upgradeable, but it is crossgradeable to the UB version.

    All the best,

    Tom

Education price also equals Government price. As far as upgrades go, you wouldn’t upgrade the “education” version. You would simply purchase the new version at the “education” price. You come out cheaper doing it like that anyways. Also, what is meant by “if you can’t afford the full software package, I’d say you’ve got problems already.?”
