    Hello All,

I’m trying to put together a new Final Cut System and I need to get an I/O Card and breakout box, but I’m a little confused. Our old PC based system came with a huge breakout box into which we connected our Sony DVCAM Deck, a consumer VHS machine, a consumer DVD machine, audio reference monitors, Video Reference monitors, a mixing board, etc. A few people have recommended AJA or Blackmagic cards to me, but when I looked at the breakout boxes for them they don’t have very many ins or out, especially not analog. I’m obviously not a computer/connectivity guru but our current breakout box has about 2 dozen cords connected to it and I’m assuming that I will need a similar set up (since I’ll be using the same gear) for the new system. Do they not make breakout boxes to handle a lot of inputs anymore? Can anyone give me some suggestions here? Right now we are still in SD but would also like some flexibility to expand into HD in the next few years.

    Hi Leigh.
What is your budget for this? There are different answers for different budgets and uses. I use the AJA IO which has plenty of inputs and outputs. I’ve got a DVD, VHS, Tape Deck, Digibeta Deck, NTSC monitor and full audio board hooked up to it. If you need anything additional you can add switcher to it. I work in 10 bit uncompressed SD and the throughput on this device keeps up just fine. If you’re considering an HD model, the guy from AJA adviced me to go with the Kona card instead of the IO HD if I am solely working from a tower (not a laptop). I’ve had the AJA IO for 5 or six years now without a problem so it’s built to last, more than I can say for the Mac’s themselves.
    Good luck,
    Andrea

Precisely what inputs do you need? A few dozen cords doesn’t really tell us much.

The AJA Kona LHe handles all manner of analog and digital I/O

The AJA Io handles even more analog and digital I/o

The AJA Io HD adds even more connectivity and adds HD functionality.

One of those three units will handle everything you need.
