  • Card to replace ATI Radeon HD 2600 for FCPX?

Posted by Bobby Cullipher on May 4, 2012 at 2:24 am

I wanted to give FCPX a try before finding another editing solution; I can’t afford the juiced-up Apple Computers anymore. I tried to dl the trial tonight but was told that my videocard is not supported. I have a ATI Radeon HD 2600… dual monitors. What video card do you recommend, and that is most compatible with my system, to make FCPX run at its best?

    Other computer specs:

    Mac OS X 10.6.8
    Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2 X 3.2 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per processor): 12 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.6 GHz

Thanks in advance for your guidance!

Thank you… I read about this card in another post on here… but when I went to apples website, I found this link https://support.apple.com/kb/TS3891 which reads:

You may notice display anomalies or issues playing back video or other HDCP-encoded content when you use an ATI Radeon HD 5770 video card in Mac Pro computers released before the Mac Pro (Mid 2010).

My computer is from 2008/09. I’d prefer to stay away from any card that has reported compatibility issues… I’m not a tech guy in any form or fashion and need something that’s going to work out-of-the-box. Thanks for contributing your knowledge!

I use it in my 2006 Mac Pro with no issues.

    Hey Bobby

I’ve used the 5770 in a 2008 “Harpertown” Mac Pro (which i think is the same as yours based on your specs), and am now using it in a 2009 “Nehalem” Mac Pro. no issues at all. the drivers are included with the OS updates from Apple. Since you’re running the latest version of Snow Leopard (10.6.8), you’re all good.

Just to add to this I have a 5770 running perfectly in a Mac Pro 1.1
As long as you are running Snow Leopard or later should work fine.

    best wishes

    Follow up:
I replaced the ATI Radeon HD 2600 with the ATI Radeon HD 5770 for the use of FCPX… its working great so far. The card is huge and requires a little finesse to install.
