  • card for outputting HDV to my HDTV? (vegas 6 + Parhelia APVe?)

Posted by Idiotprogrammer on January 26, 2006 at 2:01 pm

Hi, I have a Sony HDV hc1 and use vegas 6. I also will have an 720p HDTV soon.

    Some questions:

I think I need a new video card with component output to my HDTV.

I am new to the video production workflow, so pardon the basic questions.

Someone mentioned the Matrox Parhelia APVe Video Card as satisfying my broadcast monitor needs. On the other hand, their specs/marketing literature claims support by other NLE but NOT by Vegas.

for example, here, https://dv411.com/matroxgraphics.html#nles shows that shows that “video output preview with Matrox graphics cards.” is not supported for vegas. Another spec specifically doesn’t mention Vegas on one of its supported plugins: ” WYSIWYG PureVideo plug-in for Adobe Premiere Pro , Adobe After Effects , Photoshop , Autodesk Combustion and 3dsmax, along with NewTek Lightwave 3D , you can see your final output on an HDTV monitor without the necessity for looping your signal back through the 1394 port.”

Do these things make the video card not a good choice for a Vegas 6/HDV environment?

If so, what video cards would be good for this? I assume that what I’d need is an ability to support VGA and component out. How does Vegas enter the picture for this?

One other thing. I’m probably going to buy DVD Linkplayer and use its USB connection to connect a usb hard drive to view signal on my HDTV. If that can be done, then do I really need a fancy video card?

    I Have a matrox g550 dualhead card.
It does an amazingly good job with dual screen and vegas..never a hiccup.
I looked into the parhelia apv1e as well while building a new tower.
When their ad was posted Vegas 5 could not output directly to TV but could VIA fire wire. The WYSIWIG stuff I believe is only for those other programs with the associated drivers, software.
But as far as preview to TV off of the card. V6 now does that.
I dont think they updated their compatibility list since the new version of Vegas that now supports this feature.
Preview to TV via fire wire will work !!
I’m sure someone can verify this for you here.

I’m also looking at Nvidia Quadro FX 540. I’m assuming both can serve my purpose ok? (FX 540 is $100 cheaper).

    (1 VGA + HDTV out).

It’s boiling down to 1)cost and 2)most of the time I’ll be using a single analog VGA monitor and possibly adding a genuine HDTV LCD monitor when they become affordable. Have I forgotten anything?

Anyway, it’s nice to know the the Parhelia works well out of the box with Vegas.

BTW, newegg.com has a good filter for video cards.

(Sorry for asking about HW on the vegas forum; don’t worry, once I get kicking, I’ll be posting here more often.

    I dont do HDTV yet.
so I’m not versed in the gear requirements.
I like the matrox for the dual moniter plus a TV out.

Id set it up as 3 moniters then use the firewire out to a TV via converter .

Unless something has changed you will not be able to view HDV out realtime from vegas. DV yes, HDV not yet at least.

The only way I know around this is to get a blackmagic-design decklink card with HD-SDI out coupled to an HD-Link box to get component hd out to something like an apple or dell flat panel.

Yes, I eventually talked to tech support at Matrox, and they confirmed this.

I didn’t exactly follow the answer, but he said that some editor environments detect “overlay services” automatically to output to fullscreen. Other editors require a special plugin to support this output feature specifically.

Vegas is one of the editing envonments that requires a plugin. And because the plugin has not been made specifically for vegas, therefore, the card can’t let the HDTV serve as a broadcast monitor.

    I don’t exactly follow this.

Someone suggested using linkplayer 2 to connect your USB HD drive with
your HD content to the usb port of linkplayer 2. That sounds doable,
but tedious during the edit process. I don’t exactly know what the typical workflow process is like (although DSE’s book on vegas 6 is on its way to me from amazon.com, so maybe I’ll know soon).

    Other ideas?
