Card dance or not
Posted by Jay Brown on March 16, 2008 at 2:09 pmHi
I would like to have a logo split up ala card dance but instead of rotating the separate squares on their own access i would like to move (slide) them sequentially and indiviually through the z axis coming to rest on a singular plane – like a simple jigsaw I guess revealing the final logo.
I think Im on the wrong track with card dance – is there a more suitable plugin to achieve this.
Thanks in advance

March 16, 2008 at 3:53 pmCard Dance will move cards on the Z axis. Look for “Z position” in the Card Dance controls.

I noticed the Z setting on dance but it all seemed rather random in control terms (albeit in the z axis) even with a solid gradient. Its the sequential factor of each ‘card’ moving into place one after the other (left to right, column after column – a bit like wipe but in the z axis) thats important in this spot which is why I ended up looking at wipe.
So sorry to go on but I have to reiterate the question.

March 16, 2008 at 9:38 pmCard Dance is supremely applicable to your need. Your followup post indicates you’re doing something wrong but without watching over your shoulder I can’t even guess. Sometimes folks try to use it in a 3d comp and are surprised it’s a just flat representation of 3D within the filter, not available in the 3D comp. I love CD and use it often. The 3D manipulation within the filter though is totally stunning.
There is an extensive effects help system for AE so be sure to use the online manual. You might eve try to google CARD DANCE and see what shows up. I cannot recall any tutorials for Card Dance but there should be something available.
Brian Maffitt, who invented CD and dozens of other incredible AE filters, runs Total Training. There may just be some old Card Dance tutorials on their site, dunno. His original Atomic training videos included endless cool applications for Card Dance.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

March 17, 2008 at 12:32 amYou could bring the logo into Photoshop and break it up into layers. Then import that PSD document as a composition so you have the puzzle pieces you want to animate.
It will give you more control but will require a lot more keyframing. -

Strangely googling it and reading the online manual where my first ports of call.
That didnt bear any fruition so hence ending up here. I know what it can do and I know what its is capable of but I cannot get it too run in a sequential effect.

If you had said so at the start I would not have suggested it.

A solid gradient has no control pixels. User anything except a solid.
If I was watching you work solving this would be easy. Card Dance is a wonderful toy, I use it often, I have it open right now, and have never had any of the problems you are experiencing.

Its really frustrating when something you think that is going to be relatively simple turns out to be a pain.
