Card Dance in 3D
Posted by Emiliano Grimaldi on June 30, 2009 at 4:59 pmIs it possible to give a depth to the cards created?
Thanks,
Emiliano

June 30, 2009 at 6:01 pmNot really.
You could create a couple instances of it and offset them from one another, but that would probably look a little weird. You could use Shatter and time remap it, but you won’t have the same kind of controls.– The Great Szalam

I saw some footage where they have the cards in 3D, wondering then how did they do it.

Off the top of my head, you could build pieces in AE with solids for the sides and back, parent them to the front piece and each card would be animated separately (or with expressions).
Or an actual 3d program could have been used.– The Great Szalam

July 2, 2009 at 3:49 pmHi Micheal,
here is an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQP4eC9dAjE there is a sequence where you have 3d cards. I don t think they used a separate 3d programme.

July 2, 2009 at 5:38 pmIf you mean that part at the very beginning where orange cards transition into a screen shot; there’s no depth there, that is easily done with regular Card Dance or Card Wipe.
If you mean the part with the playing cards; that is definitely a 3d program. This entire demo reel is showcasing 3d animation work. All of it is done in a 3d program. (AE may have been used for compositing and coloring)
That could be faked in AE though. If you used Card Dance or Card Wipe for the background cards and Zaxwerk’s 3d Invigorator for a few foreground cards you could pull it off.
If you don’t have the 3d Invigorator, you could use Shatter. There are several posts/tutorials out there on using Shatter to simulate 3d.
Or you could create a bunch of identical layers barely set off in z space from each other. Parent them all to one of the layers. Enough layers spaced the correct distance apart can give a good illusion of 3d.– The Great Szalam
