  • Capturing video in DV format?

Posted by Mark Lynch on August 30, 2009 at 2:34 pm

I searched but couldn’t find anything.

I’m doing a big video project for a group, and I need to capture the video from my mini-DV video camera onto Sony Vegas 7 [or 8 if need be] in its raw DV format.

I can only get it into .AVI format, which is just a container. I need it raw, and uncompressed. What settings do I need to set to do this?

    Thanks!

The data that’s recorded on a miniDV camcorder is already compressed (approx. 5:1) and there’s no way to capture anything other than that.

Hm, wow. Is that simply because that’s what “Mini-DV” camcorders do? If so that’s interesting; you’re the first one to catch/know that. Maybe I should invest in a higher class camera. Well that solves all my problems, in a way haha. Thank you!

Hmm, my camcorder is set to 16:9 [unless that and 5:1 are unrelated]. So am I to assume that this is the standard for Mini-DV camcorders?

    Sorry about that.
5:1 is the compression ratio of miniDV footage and this is standard for all miniDV camcorders.

The 16:9 has nothing to do with the 5:1. Apples and oranges. Mini DV camcorders record in DV.avi which is about 5:1 compression ratio.

Well thanks for this new knowledge. No more obsessing over imported file type this footage. Many thanks!

If you want true raw you need an HDMI out port, and then capture either to a BlackMagic card such as Intensity Pro (which is not officially supported in Vegas, but there are hacks), or an AJA card (which is supported, but only in SDI, so you have to use converters.

There is also the Convergent Design compact flash card unit, which is probably a better way to go, but if you really want to do all that, and have tons of hard drive space, then do your research first.

    I hope that helps.
