Capturing video and audio for church
I am setting up a new system for videoing at our church. I would like to be able to use the firewire port out of a digital camcorder, but I need to capture the audio from the sound system instead of the camera. Is this possible without having a seperate capture card such as a Canopus? The new computer already has a firewire port, so I can go from the camera straight to the computer via firewire, but that normally will capture the audio from the camera mic…which will pick up much more ambient noise (fussy babies, etc.). If I had a Canopus unit I could just go S-video out of the camera and use the audio from the house system, but if I can use firewire I won’t need the extra hardware. I was planning on using the capture program within Vegas, but if something like Scenealizer will allow seperate audio I’d be willing to go that route.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Does the camera have a line level audio input? If so,just run the sound board audio through there.

Actually, we haven’t bought a camera yet. I had an old JVC 3CCD analog camera that I donated to the church and we have been using it…recording directly to a stand alone DVD recorder…but the picture is not all that great. Even the cheaper 1CCD digital camcorders these days have a much better picture than this old camera. Even with the 1/8″ mini plug I should be able to send the audio to the camcorder. I just experimented with my Sony 460…plugged an A/V cable into the jack and it didn’t affect the video portion. I haven’t tried sending audio to it yet, but I see no reason why it shouldn’t work.

Does anyone know off hand if plugging into the mini jack will send the audio to the main stereo track of the camcorder or will it need to be set up so it records on the secondary stereo tracks? Just curious.

Usually it cuts out the built in camera mic and records onto either both or one of the stereo tracks – I have an external mic that does Left only, and Vegas Right click > Channels puts this over both R and L sides.

I realize you’re probably on a very limited budget, but you should at least check out DVRack from Serious Magic. There’s a “lite” version for (I think) $150. It’s a specialized hard-drive recorder that will give you a lot more info and flexibility when recording camera to hard drive via firewire, much more info and monitoring than Vegas Capture. Your application is crying out for this, IMO.
Note that sometimes you’ll need an additional FW card to make a DV source work with external FW hard drives in DVRAck – but this is all of $25 or so.
Yes, you either need to bring in audio at the camcorder or at an external converter box.
