  • Capturing VHS, how do I convert one track mono audio to stereo?

Posted by Sebastian Knight on November 23, 2008 at 12:57 pm

I am creating dvd’s from some old VHS tapes, and the audio track is mono, I want to know how to convert audio to stereo? Do I start with the audio settings on Mono or stereo, and then what is the next step to get mono audio converted to stereo?

As always thanks in advance for reading and replying to my post.

    Sebastian,

Highlight the audio. You may have to unlink it from the video. Option/Shift click on the audio track and drag it down one track to duplicate it. Highlight both tracks and hit option L. This is not really true stereo but you will have audio in both channels.

    Have a wonderful day.

I do this all the time, ditto on what the previous post said, and you can also drag the audio lines to right and left after you’ve made a duplicate track. It’s phony stereo, but it’s better than mono.

Actually it is not anything but mono. If you simply pan your mono track to centre it is the same as two tracks of the same mono panned.

You want to be careful how you implement 2-channel mono because you then have the potential to create a phase-cancellation problem, and this will bedevil you with overall level control problems all thru the project. Ask me how I learned that, or just guess:-)
