Need help regarding uncompressed HD capture.
I have the new Mac Pro 8 core 2.8 GHz and 320 G Hard drive
and need to capture uncompressed HD from P2 card using HVX 200
My question is do I need a third party capture card with mac pro (like Black magic/ Decklink) to capture 1080 P in 4:2:2.? Right now I do not have any funds. Latest FCP is loaded in my system and my projects are of 20 to 30 minutes duration.

P2 cards are not uncompressed HD. They are DVCPro HD and yes, that codec is 4:2:2. A single SATA drive will suffice that is separate from your boot drive, but you really should have two raided together. If you plan on truly editing uncompressed 1080 video, you will need a capture card and a fast external Raid.

You don’t have enough drive space or speed for uncompressed. Just import the files using log and transfer.

    Tutorial:

    P2 Workflow with FCP 6

This will import the footage from the card without any loss in quality.

Thanks for the answers, Some how I hand a wrong impression about the new FCP/Mac Pro combination I thought it is capable of reducing the HD uncompressed file size and could be easly capture/edit cost effectively. and also I thought Mac pro had a professional 422 capture card built in…In this regard Can I say Sony EX1 is the best choice for a TV/DVD/Blue-Ray out put compared to HVX 200 am I correct..?

As Jeremy noted, you’re NOT working in Uncompressed HD. You’re working in DVCPro HD from an HVX-200 Camera. This is a compressed form of HD that is much smaller than Uncompressed.

Your impression of FCP/Mac Pro is completely wrong. To reduce an uncompressed HD source, like HDCAM or D5, requires something like the AJA Kona series of cards.

To edit with Uncompressed HD, you require a very fast media array in the neighborhood of 250MB/s.

[Suresh Nair] “also I thought Mac pro had a professional 422 capture card built in.”

Completely wrong. Not really sure where you would get that idea.

Nope. Both work. We’ve already done four blu ray titles from the Panasonic HVX-900 / Panasonic Varicam cameras that shoot in the same DVCPro HD codec as the HVX-200.
