  • Capturing sound into zoom H6 then fed through line-out into mic-in on GH5

Posted by Hugh Hill on July 15, 2019 at 5:09 pm

I am trying to capture sound into my zoom H6 via my Sennheiser AVX lapel mic (on talent) to the receiver on the Zoom then fed through line-out (On the Zoom H6) into mic-in port on the GH5.
I am using a 3.5 to 3.5 (MV-RC100) attenuator between the line out and mic in, but the sound is still nowhere near as good as directly into the Zoom H6.
Is there anything else I could do to get better audition capturing sound into the camera (GH5) as the editor is insisting that the sound must be in camera (Which I am not used to only for using to match up in post.)

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

    Thanks

Hello Hugh and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

My best guess is that you’re feeding a mono output on the H6 into a stereo input on the GH5.

    Could that be?

Also are there any filters or compressors or limiters on in the GH5? That would be bad.

We don’t know exactly what you mean by “nowhere near as good”.
A sample of the inferior recording would permit people to evaluate and diagnose possible problems.
There are perhaps a dozen or more possible things that could cause problems.

That MV-RC100 cable is remarkably light on any technical details.
Have you used it successfully in any other situation?

    Hi Richard,

Thank you for taking the time to reply, sorry for the delay in getting back I was away.

I was told by friends that the quality should be as near if not equal to the wireless in audio, so in the meantime, I bought another this time it works much better so I am not sure what is causing the slight echo as I have made no changes to the camera (GH5) or the Zoom and as for the AVX system that’s all auto.
All I can think is that something was wrong with the first wire although not sure what as it was unused until the test?

But the sound is much better.

ps, the only technical details I could find was –

    Hello Ty,

Thank you for your reply and sorry for my delay in getting back I was away for a few days.

I think I managed to isolate the problem.
It was the cable – Movo MV-RC100 3.5mm Male Line-in to Male Microphone Attenuator Cable, although new and never used it has a suspected fault as I bought another which does not have the same effect and sounds much better.
the camera and zoom 6 settings remain exactly the same which is how I know.

I honestly thought I was doing something wrong, but a few friends told me that it should not be happening which prompted me into getting another Movo MV-RC100 to see if it would make any difference. (and it did.)

Again I would like to say thank you for your time and recommendations which I am sure at some point will come in handy.

    Warm regards.

    Hugh
