  • Capturing SD 16×9 footage vs 4×3

Posted by George Odell on October 25, 2013 at 7:19 pm

I need to capture some DVCAM footage via firewire that was apparently shot 16×9 and hand off the USB drive to the client for them to edit.

All the captures I’ve done with Premiere for my own work was from 4×3 so I need to make sure I do the capture correctly.

Question: I know you can select “standard” and “widescreen” from the opening dialog when Premiere boots up but is this even necessary just for capturing?

That is, whether the material was shot as 4×3 or 16×9 will the capture to hard drive go correctly regardless of these upfront settings?

    Thanks!

You cannot select standard or widescreen.
Premiere will capture the footage how it was recorded to tape.
If the footage is anamorfic widescreen it will be captured in 4;3 but Premiere will interprete the footage as widescreen.

So please advise if I’m OK or not.

I had Premiere set to widescreen but the captured files
all say .9 for the aspect ratio now that they are sitting
    in the clip bin.

Do they look normal or are the stretch in the length?

I hooked up a 16×9 camera monitor and the playback off the time line via firewire into a deck looks correct. So I assume I’m OK but I still do not have an answer for next time.

Why am I seeing .9 for the aspect ration if the format (supposedly) is 16 x 9 or “widescreen” in the eyes of Premiere 6.5?

Don’t worry about it, if you captured via firewire and it was shot widescreen, your fine.
