  • Capturing protocol at end of tape/end of timecode

Okay, this is a newbie question, but I’ve search for a clear answer and I can’t find one. I’m relatively new to FCP, having converted from Avid a year or so ago.

I do a lot of interview clips with two cameras, so tend to take the whole interview in, synch the two clips, then cut down.

When capturing, I choose log and capture, hit play and then the “now” button to capture as it plays, rather than logging.

When it gets to the end of the interview, and timecode runs out, I hit the escape button. Sometimes it makes a clip, sometimes it doesn’t. Same when the tape runs out, hit esc, sometimes it makes a clip sometimes it doesn’t.

Can someone briefly tell me what is FCP’s standard protocol in dealing with a) when time code runs out and b) when tape runs out?

    Leon,

FCP should create a clip in both instances, every time, whenever you hit escape, or if it automatically detects the end of the tape. You should try trashing preferences, and then retest capture to see if it creates a clip every time, as intermittent behavior like you describe is certainly not proper and certainly not a good thing.

BTW, I highly suggest Preference Manager, a free utility from Digital Rebellion, which will allow you to trash, save, and restore several named sets of preferences. This is especially useful if you often switch back and forth from HD to SD projects.
