  • capturing PAL on a NTSC project

Posted by Nathan Golon on September 22, 2008 at 5:05 am

I’m trying to capture some 4:3 SD PAL footage into a 16:9 HDV NTSC project (with a PAL/NTSC Sony Z1U). I tried changing the capture presets under Audio/Video Settings to PAL, but it didn’t work. What do I need to change in order to capture this video?

    Thanks,

    Nathan

    “It didn’t work.”

What’s that mean? You couldn’t change the preset? It kept changing back to the HDV preset? What exactly did you do and what happened when you did it?

You change the preset to DV PAL. You make sure you deck is set to play back DV PAL and use DV device control.

    All the best,

    Tom

Right. You need to set FW PAL.

I am trying to capture PAL footage from England on an old Sony DCR trv17 camera, into Final Cut 5. I assumed that if I could see the PAL images undistorted in the camera viewer, FCP could capture them. The first time i hooked up the firewire cable, I could see vertically stretches images in capture preview. but subsequently, though the preview window gives me the vtr ok message and though I can hear the audio, no matter what setting I use in the capture presets or system settings, FCP tells me there is “no video”. Is there any solution to this problem short of buying a PAL/NTSC converter?

    Is that a PAL camera?

    Thanks for replying, Raphael.
No, the Sony Trv17 is not a PAL camera, but it plays the PAL footage back cleanly. I have just been told that the PAL footage also is Sony DVCAM, which people seem to have trouble capturing into NTSC anyway. Is capture without a PAL playback deck impossible?

    Hi Michael.
This happens in many devices (PAL DVCam camera, PAL DVD players: can play NTSC stuff); they output a signal that can be viewed in a TV or monitor, but the signal is not fully standard, so when you try to record it, no way. You need a proper player.
You may try to get a cheap SONY DSR-11. They play both standards.
