Capturing On Pro Camera & Downloading on consumer camera.
Hi Guys,
I am fairly new to everything so I figured i’d find out from the pro’s 🙂
If I capture footage on a HDV Sony Z1 but use a standard consumer HDV camcorder to download to vegas 8 will the quality be less or will it still be as good as it was captured on the Z1?
I ask because I hire the z1 to film but sometimes havnt got enough time to download all the tapes before I return it. So I thought if I bought a consumer cam i can download with that.
Your help is appreciated.

The footage is already recorded in the quality that the
HDV Sony Z1 provides….so using a different camera to
capture the contents to your computer alters nothing.Steve Rhoden

Remember it’s all digital video… only 1 (ones) and 0 (zeros) in an elementary sequence that defines the recording … if another camera, no matter the size and specs can read those bits, it will be transfered to your system exactly the same as recorded … “capturing” digital video is more like “copying” bits from the tape to your HDD….

What Steve and Enrique said is true except for one little problem. You would need to buy a consumer camera that can read Sony Z1 HDV tapes. I would go into a store with the tape before you buy. Chances are that any of the Sony HDV cameras will read it correctly. Cameras from Canon, Panasonic, JVC, etc. may not.
HDV on miniDV is NOT like DV on miniDV. Every camera manufacturer decided to add their own twist thus messing with compatibility across brands. This is mostly in the way that they write 24p information but it may affect straight NTSC or PAL HDV as well. Just check before you buy. You should be OK if you stick with a Sony consumer HDV camera.
