Capturing issues: Out of Sync & Phantom TC Breaks
Hello Cow,
For the past few months my company has been have some serious problems capturing MineDV footage. We currently are running about 10 edit bays that are all connected to our Xsan. About 3-4 of these bays are capturing footage on a daily basis, sometimes 24 hours a day. Some footage is also captured to G-raid externals for out of house editors.
We shoot 90 percent of our footage on Panasonic P2 HVX200 using Panasonic DV tapes and shooting 24p. All footage is captured using various Sony decks(dsr-11, dsr-45, dsr-1500) via firewire.
The problems we are having consist of phantom TC breaks where a tape gets cut up into multiple clips some times even skipping over a minute or two of footage. These tapes have no TC breaks as they are recorded for 1 hour straight, with out being stopped.
The other bigger problem we are having is out of sync issues when capturing. Captured footage goes out of sync by a few seconds. We also get a warning after capturing that says
“validating audio” This started about 5-6 months ago maybe 1 tape every few days, now it is much more consistent, almost every other tape. We capture on average 60 hours a week.We have been troubleshooting this problem for a few weeks now and have tried many different set ups including, new firewire cables, dumping prefs, making sure there is plenty of room on the Xsan or external drives, updated xsan software. Pretty much everything that was mentioned in previous post I had found about this subject.
Now we did try capturing a few tapes using our Panasonic cameras and didn’t have any problems, could it be the mixing of Panasonic and Sony decks that is causing these problems?
