Ok I know I should upgraded very soon but my limited funds are forcing me reluctantly to use 6.0 anway….

I bought an amazing HV20(canon) and was very excited to edit my first piece of HD and what happends ? I get the message

“The device “Microsoft AV/C Tape Subunit Device” could not be opened.

Please make sure that is turned on and is not being used by another user or application”

Well after 2 grueling days of trying to fix this, the computer finally recognizes my camera and all my buttons are working on the capturing screen so I start salivating at the mouth when what happends ? NO VIDEO ON MY PREVIEW SCREEN!! therefore no captured clips.

Can somebody please help me I am at my ends wit. O and to top it off back at the original problem 🙁 but at least I know I can fix the first one, what about the preview screen ?

First off, nothing is wrong if still using Sony vegas 6.
Now, you have an HD camcorder, and the external sony
video capture utility cannot capture or recognize
an HD Camcorder (actually when set in HD mode)…you need to use the built in capture utility (the little video camera icon in the toolbar), which opens the capture video box and selecting “HDV or SDI”
    and proceed.

Steve, thanks for your reply. So im guessing by external capture you are talking about when you go into file in vegas and go down to capture ?

And if I am understading you right, I need to go to the toolbar on my actual desktop not sony vegas toolbar ? \

    Im a little confused.

yes in sony vegas, go to file, and then select
“capture video”, and a small box will appear…
you then select “HDV or SDI” and press ok.
The internal capture window will pop up, in there you now
select your camera and it will pick up and you can go from there.

But before you do all that, make sure your camcorder is in HD mode before you even connect it to the computer.

Thats what I have been doing and the same capture screen that I used for my dvx100a comes up. Theres nothing there about selecting HD or SD.

To switch from external to internal capture in Vegas 6:
Options > Preferences > video tab > uncheck the box that says “Use external video capture application”

Use external capture for SD and internal capture for HDV.

It worked !! 🙂 so happy. Mike thank you. Do you know anyway to speed up video preview when working with the timeline ? I have it on draft and it is still jumpy. I installed 2 gigs of ram and the processer is dual 2.8.

Mike, I have one more question. I hope you dont mind. I want to make sure I have my project properties set right. I have it in 1440 by 1080 50i 25 23.957 fps. I just want to make sure Im not missing anything like pulldown or what not. Also when I click on the files I captured its saying thier 29.957 not 24p and was wondering if this is normal. Fottage from hv20 was shot in 24p.

Daniel, I’m glad to hear that it worked for you.

As far as your slow preview rate, all I can offer is the usual suggestion about turning off or disabling ALL unnecessary services such as the internet, anti-virus, etc.
Are you editing with one hard drive or more?
Two drives is the recommended minimum with drive C for all programs and drive D for all editing.
I personally have 3 drives with drive D for all raw material and drive E for rendered masters.

Daniel, I don’t edit HDV yety so I don’t feel qualified to answer your question.
A quick search of this forum shows that there’s at least a few HV-20 owners so, if I was you , I’d start a new thread asking about this specific question.
