I know the basics of ‘Batch’ and ‘Seamless’ capturing in Premiere CS5, but how can I capture video in 6-minute (seamless) clips as I used to do in my old system with Canopus DV Storm? Is this possible? -KS

Do you need 6-minute clips to keep them small for sending over the net or something like that? Adobe will not automatically split captures, it is just one long .avi file of any length, no capture limits.

When I used to capture with my old Windows 2000 system (Canopus), DV Storm would perform a ‘seamless’ capture and log the clips into (for instance) 6 or 7-minute clips. The entire tape would be captured. This permitted me to easily mark in and out points in the preview window. Needless to say putting an entire seamless capture in Premiere Pro would increase editing time. -KS

Ah, Canopus did that to stay below the dreaded 2GB file size limit I believe. That was some time ago!

What you want then is the check the “Scene Detect” box in the capture window, and this will break up scenes from the tape and sequentially number them. Does this on the fly for DV clips via 1394.

The old canopus codec was based on VFW not Direct Show, the newer versions of Storm did regular capture so it would work with the early versions of Ppro.

Two Gig / Ten Gig… I’m not fussy about the file size. What erks me is trying to put a Premiere Pro seamless capture in the source window and manipulating the jog wheel to locate a 7-second scene. I realize I could just play the seamless capture in the source window and select in’s and out’s but that lengthens edit time, and time is money but then again, nothings perfect. -KS

Just realized by watching one of your tutorials that I can capture the entire tape, then make smaller more managable subclips and also rename them to whatever I want. Problem solved… theoretically. -KS
