Newbie to Mac / FCP… Actually still at rookie status for all things HDV, after years as pro still shooter.

Just now have my first MAC with FCP. I’m looking for basic advice for capturing formats / tricks.

    The Basics are this:

    MAC G5, late 2005 version. Dual Core 2.0. 16gb Ram, Two internal drives (320gb / 16mb cache) and external Firewire 250gb / 8mb). Final Cut Studio 2 (FCP 6)

Current footage is recorded using Sony V1U at normal 1080i.

The goals for this footage is:

    A: 720×1280 WMV/HD downloads for sites members.

B: FCP editing / DVD Studio Pro authoring for DVDs.

My Experience is minimal at best. First, Sony HC1 capture and editing on Windows Vista with Windows Movie Maker, and more recently capturing / editing in Sony Movie Studio 9.

Both of those programs offer very few options in the process of capturing.

So, my first question is: Capturing… FCP offers all sorts of options I don’t understand (ProRes and all that stuff).

Can somebody give me a bit of guidence as to the first step in working with FCP — The Capturing.

    Thanks in advance.

You might want to start with the PDF manual and looking through the section on capturing.

    All the best,
