Capturing in FCP 5.1 for Editing in 4.5
Posted by Ace Billet on January 6, 2007 at 11:43 pmI want to use my laptop (MBP 2Ghz) to capture some DV footage to an external drive,
then use the drive and the quicktime files to edit on a G5 with FCP 4.5.
I’m capturing with the DV-PAL preset, so I wont need the FCP project file for later “online” captures. Can FCP 4.5 handle footage(not project filez) that was captured on 5.1 ?
cheers

January 6, 2007 at 11:51 pmA big difference will be that if your FCP 4.5 system is on quicktime 6.x.x. There’s a big difference between quicktime 6 and 7 and FCP then treats the files differently especially with concerns to audio. You can log the clips on your laptop then send an xml to the FCP 4.5 machine and recapture on that machine. That would be the preferred and safest workflow.

January 7, 2007 at 12:04 amBoth machines run 10.4.8 and have quicktime 7 on.
A recapture (or any capture on the 4.5 system for that matter) is what Im trying to avoid,
just so I can use the G5 for work and not tie the machine up for 5 hours.cheers

January 7, 2007 at 12:32 amI still wouldn’t recommend it. if you log on your laptop, that will eat up most of the time. Then export an XML and use the G5 to capture the already logged material. At that point you are just feeing tapes. I didn’t have any good experiences capturing in FCP5 and then editing in 4.5. It just never worked out quite right. Capturing in 4.5 after logging in 5 always worked flawlessly. I guess it depends on how important this project is to you.

January 7, 2007 at 12:54 amSorry if my intention is not clear enough:
I don’t want to log on the 5.1 machine. Just use capture now to capture 20min clips.
I’ll use the QUICKTIME files only – no XML or other data needed. The question is will the Quicktime fille differ from 5.1 to 4.5 ?
cheers

January 7, 2007 at 1:08 amMy past post sums it up.
If you won’t take no for an answer, try it and see.

January 7, 2007 at 2:56 amIf I remember correctly I captured in 5 and had another editor edit in 4.5 and there were major audio issues.
4.5 only saw the clips as having 1 channel of audio even though I captured 2 channels on my 5.0 system and when I plugge the G-raid back into the 5.0 system it showed and played 2 channels of audio.
Hope that answers your question well enough.

January 7, 2007 at 3:26 amI tired to tell him that it’s not going to work well, but he won’t believe me.
I had the same problems as you, Steve.
I know you don’t want to hear it, Asaf, but XML is your best bet. Even if you use capture now, and send that data to 4.5 (as long as you capture with timecode), all you have to do is feed tapes.
If you try and capture in 5 and edit in 4.5, you will come across problems and you will have to recapture with 4.5 anyway. I am trying to save you some money, so do it right. Even though it might cost you some time on the G5, it’ll save you if you have to end up capturing it all over again anyway.

January 7, 2007 at 5:03 amJeremy;
Some people have to find out for themselves.
All we can do is give them our suggestions, but they are going to do what they want anyway.
I think my post was a little more specific on what type of “Audio Problems” he will run into and the specifics may be what makes him listen to what we both have said.

January 7, 2007 at 8:07 amWe have exactly the same problem with our G-5 Quad but not with our dual 2.7. We just took delivery on a MacPro dual 3.0. We’ll keep you posted on that one.

January 7, 2007 at 8:10 amI must be on some weird kind of LSD because I posted a reply in a different thread and it ended up in this one. At least I spelled everything correctly.
